How many hard drives can you run on a computer... I have 3 right now, two internal, one usb hard drives. Can I put another external on it? Plan on buying 1tb hard drive.

What do you need with that much hard drive space?

One hard drive is enough. I recommend one external for backups too. It doesn't show off your PC, or make your PC any better by adding a ton of Hard Drives.

I don't see why not. You should be limited only by the number of letters in the alphabet(drive A: to drive Z:) and the output of your power supply unit.

When I can afford it I plan to have a computer with a few terabytes in it strictly for storing music, TV shows and movies on it. My own television, no commercials, plays what I like all the time.

It essentially depends on just how you want to configure things.

Most cases limit you to 4 or 6.

Each IDE controller can drive 2 drives (master/slave) and most motherboards and add on controller cards come with 2 IDE controllers for a total of 4 drives per motherboard or controller.

I believe that SCSI allows thirty drives per bus.
External firewire/USB drives could likely have 20 or 30 more.

Somehow I doubt if you really want THAT much storage!
Backing it all up gets to be an issue even with a single 300Gb drive, at some point you will spend all of your time doing backups.

Why do you need so much space? ive got a 500 gig and i have only used one third of it..

oh and i got an USB LanDisk wich holds up to 500 gig too, it connects all the PCs in my house together. (my familys and my one.)

(my own is best in every way :D)

If you're downloading things like HD movies (aka porn), it will eat up space really fast.

There is no limit to how many hard drives you can have on your pc.BUT the more you have the slower you pc is becos it hast 2 check all those hard drives at start. Its best to have 1 hard drive like 1Tb and 1 usb hard drive thats not pluged in all the time.

How many slots can the case hold is probably the answer and power usage. Though those usb external harddrives are so useful, plug in only when you need it lol.

Raptors are fast, but if you have the money, Solid-State!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive

As for how many... Just depends on the motherboard and case limits. Terrabytes are cheap and you shouldn't need too many of those.

almost infinite drives. count your IDE (count each IDE slot on mobo as 2 drives) and SATA ports, then your USB ports and any e-SATA, or Firewire too. then thats how many you can have. add some PCI/PCI-E cards for more. But if you go anymore than 2 internal drives... i'd suggest using RAID. I run a RAID 0 right now with 2 320GBs (acts as one drive, "stripes" data onto the 2) and my performance is up 40% over regular 7200RPM drives. Problem is i have no backup or UPS lol. so if i encounter a problem where a HDD would normally drop dead, i lose both :D.

RAID is the way to go, especially for extremely large amounts of files... RAID up some raptors in any 0 configuration and WHOA.

SCSI drives generally are 15000RPM but i think theres some OS and mobo limitations to using SCSI, and the price is much higher.

Solid State drives are ABSOLUTELY top of the line in basically all specs of HDDs. But insanely expensive currently.
