View Full Version : What/how many entities makes a map lag a server?

I'm making a map and I'm wondering if too many spotlights, or other entities, will make a server lag because of the way a map is made?

What entities/functions are safe to use on a large scale?
Which entities should be avoided when making a map?
Which entities use the largest of the server's resources?

I'm not a map maker, but I do know spotlights and lots of fire can lag clients pretty badly. The first version of the I Am Legend map was really bad...

I think breakable entitys can lag a bunch cause once they break up they become individualized. I notice when barrels explode (deathrun) I tend to lag a bit, but that might just be my computer trying to process such a huge explosion. Lights I don't see makeing too much a difference other than changing your fps. Outside of those things I'm not too sure.

I think it depends more on where you place the entities. If they can't be seen then they won't load right away.
