If its paint... run it in paint? Or just find the program you'd want to use manually.

Are you trying to open something with a file extension not recognized by your PC?

Here's some extensions for the ones you said, but do tell what the file extension is

.pdf = Adobe Reader
.torrent = uTorrent
.html/.htm/.php/.xml/etc. = Internet Explorer
.wmv/.mp3/.aac/etc. = Windows Media Player
there's more but I'm tired of typing these
to know what the file extension is, right click, and select properties on the file
the file extension will be listed under "Type of File: WinRAR Archive (.rar)"
the WinRAR is an example

From what I've been told from him, ist random, doesn't matter what file type. Said problems started today, tryed to get him to do a system restore to yesterday or the day before, but when he tried to open that program it asked what program to run it. When we tried to see if he had system restore activated through the system setup, none of the tabs changed. Short of fully restarting his computer with the boot disks (which are awol) I don't know where else to direct him. He's runnin vista btw. So thats my synopsis of his problem. Some config prolly was changed or possible virus is my diagnosis.

Were you looking at porn???? I think some one got a porn bug in their system:)

Should be no reason it would just start asking for what program you want to us. When that pops up just means there has not been a program ever installed on your computer that would know how to open or use that extension.

What's an .etc file? :rlol:

hey, i said etc. not .etc

anyways, he may have just reset all the file extensions, since the purpose of an extension is tell the os which program to open that certain file with
hence .txt makes vista run the file in notepad

I think you are on to something there...is there a config file for like the basic windows programs?

Dark Torcher

well not like cs:s config, but yes, there is, but no one usually deletes it since they dont know where it is, so maybe a malicious file did it, but we need *feedback*
you cant diagnose without enough info about the problem
if he really did reset it, all the files should be asking what program they should be opened with, but this might take an half an hour at most to replace everything back to normal

if system restore does not fix it for you, you should try the original vista install cd to repair all vista system files and drivers back to their original working state, then update via Windows Update to the recent versions

but yes, please reply Dracula

ok, so tell us what the file extension is
you can find it by right-clicking on the file and selecting properties
the file extension will be in parentheses and will be listed next to "Type of File:"

Dracula

EXE

only those ones

Dark Torcher
18 Jul 2008, 09:44am
if it's an .exe, it is an application and should run fine unless it is missing its files, you should no need to set it up to open with any program, but you can try opening it with explorer.exe (vista)
