View Full Version : The deal with Anime?

Obviously over the years I have watched some anime, pokemon springs to mind.

But as I grow older I really do lose interest. There always seems to be a really bad story line, or some sort of "happy" lesson to be learnt....share cupcakes with your friends yay...

Er I didn't really get into Dragonball Z, didn't have the right channel until it had blown over, and the story seemed a bit pointless.

Maybe it is me, I am more into clever programmes, like Prison Break, until they get to series 10414 like Lost....

Er I think for kids they are fun but I wander why it is still popular with people over 15. I'm guessing it isn't to do with anime porn because that is an all time low in life.

So I guess...tell me what you like about anime, there is obviously different kinds of anime, I thought the small "Devil May Cry" anime series was slightly enjoyable, but I do love the game series.

If I said something I disliked most about anime, it is a tie between the retarded "closed eyes massive smile on girls" faces and pointless morales.

I'm with ApplyShark on this, thats disrespecting admins and players

Some Anime is good, because of the storyline or it looks cool. But sometimes I just can't fucking stay up late enough to watch it on Cartoon Network lol I watched some Dragon Ball Z back when it was on WB11 when it was on 6 in the morning. But I was liek 10 or something and Pokemon was just coming out too. Red Version owned lol

Try watching Cowboy Bebop, its set in the future, about bounty hunters, and its presented quite blade runner-esque
Bleach and One Piece are good if you like humour mixed with some cool fight scenes
Death Note and Code Geas have good stories, with some great twists

Dracula

My suggestions are u watch

Death Note - Ghost In The Shell - Neon Genisis Evangelion - Elfen Lied

The last to get really weird at the end all have action and death :]

Most popular anime(and by popular I mean popular in North America) is absolute grade A crap. I watched 10 episodes of Naruto before I realized they were pulling the same shit Dragonball Z was pulling.

DBZ was fun for awhile, because it was the first of it's kind that I've seen and it was larger than life, and as I understand it had superb animation for it's time. Maybe not quite as big impact-wise as AKIRA, but it certainly looks a lot better than the lazy crap that gets made today. I could excuse lazy crap if the show was interesting enough to watch, but most anime just aren't.

Trigun was fun for awhile. I watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop, threw up my hands and said "What in the world is all the fuss? That was the most boring thing I've ever seen!". Probably unfair to judge it by one episode, but I assume most first episodes are there to suck you in and make you want to watch more. Madbull 34 was fun because I rented the VHS tapes when I was under 18. It was violent, sexual, and funny.

Another VHS I remember renting from that era is Perfect Blue, one of the best animated movies ever made, right up there with AKIRA though not because of it's animation/art. Perfect Blue could have easily been made into a very good live action movie.

Right now I'm willing to watch anything in a realistic sort of setting. I'm done with high fantasy, I feel like I'm too old for it. I'll watch high fantasy if it's done in a certain way and good, like Princess Mononoke. Perfect Blue as I said is very good. Great Teacher Onizuka is fantastic as well, and so is the live action series, to the point where I might recommend the live action series over the anime.

I like the art style, when it's done a certain way. I hate that cutesy-wootsy bullshit that's present in a lot of series. I'll tolerate it in small doses but when regular dialogue takes place with characters who sound like they've been doped up on speed and have taken in 3 tonnes of sugar, there's no one on this Earth I want to bludgeon more than people who are over 18 and watch that shit. I'm in college, I've seen these people with their faggoty laptops watching that crap every chance they get.

Cowboy Bebop is something you probably have to watch a few episodes of to undertsand why people love it so much. One of the reasons is that it doesn't have the 'save the universe' plot that most animes seem to have

I Liked cartoons when i was a kid, like alot of people.
but for the intense anime and japanese movies,
its just wayyyyy to fantasy for me.
i mean its cool and creative and all.
but If i was to get into anime,
it would seem like something that would
kinda let my mind drift from reality too much.

if I had a problem with reality id do drugs.
but i dont.

Things like Pokemon are mainly for little kids.

There are lots of different anime for either kids, teenagers, and/or adults.

The type of anime that I like are action/comedy.

Here's a list of some of my favorite anime:

History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi
Great Teacher Onzika
One Piece
Naruto
Rurouni Kenshin
Hunter X Hunter

You can watch all of them on this website: http://www.instantz.net/

There are also some Anime movies, which are very popular and successful. I'm 100% positive that you'll like each movie on the following page (minus Tales from the Earth Sea):

Omg Princess Mononoke I saw this ages ago on the tv and it was actually GOOD. I couldn't stop laughing at this scene when the archer shoots an arrow right through a guys face the way they showed it was hilarious. :rlol: That said however it is a BIT random.....

Pom Poko.....WTF is this shit, seriously who made it but lol I might have a look at it, utterly random but looks funny

Er the others look ok too, I have a whole Summer to burn thanks for the tips guys

The first few episodes I have an admitted nostalgic attachment too, and I still think those episodes were good. It's declined into pretty shitty repetitive crap though.

As for good anime series I'd recommend...

Cowboy Bebop
Death Note
Gundam Wing
Samurai Champloo
Yu Yu Hakusho
Dragon Ball
Naruto (though I read the manga, the anime is still good. if you can handle reading read the manga though)
Rurouni Kenshin
Trigun
Hellsing (same w/ Naruto, check out the OVAs for this show)
Bleach (not a fan, but it's very popular around the world)
Fullmetal Alchemist

Anime movies:
Kiki's Delivery Service. It's one of Hayou Miyazaki's movies, who is regarded as one of the best anime directors. Check it out.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Evangelion

LOL.

The first anime you named only came out in late 2002. And Neon Genesis Evangelion came out in 1996, which about 1/2 to 3/4 of the animes I named came out either before or around.

Me thinks Dracula needs to rethink his definition of "oldies".

Er in the past I used to read comics, nothing Japanese though. Er I don't have anything against Japanese ones I guess I prefer the western approach.

That said however, some of the movies are quite good, but I couldn't bring myself to watching a series of them.
