And I know that some of you 1984 fearing people will likely think this will lead to the end of free speech. As for now, the software involved does not have the kind of capacity to recognize specific words, but it is in the works.

I think this would also cause some negative effects, like if someone wanted to turn the camera, all they needed was someone to cause a ruckus across the street.

Something positive though...this means that there could very well be these super cameras in a new Splinter Cell or tactical espionage game. More challenge for everyone!

It is the apocalypse!!!

The cameras will spy on us and sell porn to the highest bidding robots and take over the world :scared:

Really though this sounds like an ok idea to me. It all depends on how far they really want to go...one minute it is stopping burglars the next it is watching us eat dinner making sure we don't talk about anyone the government disapproves of.

People ride America's ass because of "illegal warrantless wiretapping", but having millions of cameras is okay.

The cameras are in public places for safety reasons or in private establishments. Phone calls are supposed to remain private unless you want to go use the speaker. However, the Brits may be more evil than I think...:001_rolleyes:

To avoid all the drama, the US should not have publicly announced it. If they want to catch people, all they are going to catch are the stupid ones who are planning something over the phone when they know the government is listening.

We should all get tin foil hats and run to the hills. They are on to us...

Thank the liberal media for that.

I am sure you can make things secret enough where the evil liberal media won't know about it. This would mean that the people involved NOT talk to the media about it or talk to anyone who would talk to the media about it.

Yeah... But think about it! Our government agencies are smarter than your damn MI5! Why? Because who gives a shit about what they look like they're doing, isn't it a tad bit more effective to hear what they're saying?

The camera system is intended for crowd settings. It doesn't help to listen in on a conversation through a tap on something that could be happening in a few seconds. Also, Britain isn't as paranoid or has a better means to prevent terrorist attacks than we do. Definitely a MI5 variant of James Bond somewhere...:thumbup1:

If the government wants to listen to me telling my girlfriend how much I love her over the phone, good for them. I'd rather that then cameras looking into my house. Unless I was planning some egging of houses via phone and then the cops show up, then that just ruins it.

Seriously, with phone taps they aren't listening to EVERYONE's phone calls, just those go into/out of certain countries.

As opposed to being watching by hundreds of cameras while just walking to a movie.

You're watched by hundreds of cameras in the US in the big urban areas. Is every building that has security cameras a violation of your privacy? You are one of hundreds, if not, thousands of people on the camera. The cameras are not there to spy on everyone. They are there to see if the random wacko comes along carrying an uzi or if someone gets mugged on the street.

The security isn't looking specifically at EVERYONE. It just looks at certain people who may pose a threat. All they do is act like human eyes (and now ears) that never turn off. They perform the same functions as a security guard minus the enforcement ability, so are security guards bad? The police must be evil too...

Sounds like an unarmed British police officer to me.

Er....why is this relevant its not like the USA is bordering Iraq is it??? Infact we are closer  and a lot easier to be smuggled into, unless ofcourse they come in through Mexico :scared:.

My thought is that the only people who will care about cameras being in public areas are people actually doing something wrong.

But think how far this is going to go. If the police could they would have cameras everywhere........

The only reason they have so many speed cameras and are so strict with giving out parking tickets is because they want money, its not really about the danger of speeding.

My dad got a £70 fine and had to pay for a £50 to go to a "road rage" group for a day because he went 3 miles an hour too fast going down a hill, and it was his first offence in 25 years :001_unsure:

So whilst they want you to think it is for the good of the public, in the end it is the beginning of bigger schemes which we probably won't like.
