Yu Yu Hakusho is my favorite anime, it's great. Gundam Wing is another close favorite. Trigun is also very, very good. And Dragon Ball (original and Z, not GT) is awesome too. Samurai Champloo - also great.

And for manga - definitely check out Hellsing.

Yeah, Samurai Champloo is very good.

But as for anime movies, you need to check out Kiki's Delivery Service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiki%27s_Delivery_Service). It's written, produced, and directed by Miyazaki, who has made Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and Spirited Away. The American version has pretty good voice acting too, so it's okay to watch that rather than a subbed Japanese version.

If you people want a really good super-natural/fucked up action watch Elfien Lied (Elfen Lido) or Evan Gellion. Elfen Lied is NOT for the faint of heart or queasy.

#1) Furi Kuri (FLCL)
#2) Azumanga Daioh
#3) Excel Saga

Listed as importance
All "comedy"per se, but Excel and FLCL have action moments, too.

FLCL has 6 epsiodes, which I've watched each literally hundreds of time, BUT FOR YOU FIRST TIME WATCHING, I URGE YOU THIS: WATCH THEM IN ORDER!!! IF YOU DON'T YOU PROLLY WONT PICK UP ON THE STORYLINE! IN FACT, WATCH IT IN ORDER 2 OR 3 TIMES!!! Then after that, you'll start questioning the story, and start to pick up on cool refrences here and there. And, even watching it now, I still see things that I haven't noticed before.

Azumanga dosn't really have a story, but it is a very halirious show.
English dubbing SUCKS tho, so watch it with eng subs, or if u can speak Japanese, go ahead.

And Excel, how would I describe it... Just watch it :)
Dubbing is alright, just hard to understand at some time, Excel speaks VERY fast.

You can also check his earlier works like Nausica (I think that's how it's spelled). I usually stick to manga myself though. Oh, and an obligatory "I would suggest Bible Black" post.

Bible Black isn't considered an anime, it's a Hentai movie.

Currently watching:
Darker than Black (Semi-Action Anime) (Also hardly any comedy till EP7)
Nodame Cantabile (Music/comedy)

Recommend:
School Rumble (Most Azumanga lovers, love this series, this however the randomness makes sense for once)
Honey and Clover (Drama/Comedy)

Other's Recommendation:
Romeo X Juliet (Iono, people just said it was good, I have yet to check it out; also the story does not follow the orginal, it has been altered)
Lucky Star (This anime is for major Otakus, fortunately I am not one)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (I honestly don't know what's so great about this)
Claymore (I think it's action, I have yet to check it out.)
Seirei no Moribito (No clue whats it about, but a lot of talk about it)
Ouran Host Club (If you are a girl, not recommended for guys)
Blood+ (A lot of talk)
Trinity Blood (A lot of talk)

There are others I haven't listed, also all the ones listed above are pretty new. Should be, except for a few.

Trinity Blood is a tight anime. For those of you who don't know the premise..

The series takes place in an indeterminate time in the future, 500 years after an apocalyptic war between all of Earth's nations destroyed civilization, when humanity has reestablished itself. In this future world, the Roman Catholic Church has become a major military power, whose goals include the protection of humanity against the vampiric Methuselahs, who war upon humankind (or "Terrans," as they call humans). The seat of power is the Vatican, an attractive place with traditional European architecture; it is likely the same Vatican city in the real world (albeit perhaps rebuilt following the previous war). The Methuselahs are themselves another major political and military force. Their capital of Byzantium (presumably built on the site of the real world's Byzantium, now Istanbul) appears as an elegant metropolis, surrounded by a field of particles which filters out UV radiation, thus protecting the Methuselah population.

Both sides in this conflict are in a barely-contained cold war against each other. The current countries use "lost technologies," remnants of advanced technology that survived the apocalyptic war. These include airships, missiles, computers, etc. Worth noting is a third great power, Albion; it is a future version of Britain, with Buckingham Palace clearly seen in a number of episodes, reigned over by a monarchy. It is characterized by its superior arsenal of lost technology and weapons, and a higher level of manufacturing ability than the Vatican. Other states are rarely mentioned, but the novelized/manga version does refer to the existence of such countries.

It's just like Hellsing.

Hellsing chronicles the efforts of the mysterious and secret Royal Order of Protestant Knights, Hellsing, as it combats vampires, ghouls, and other supernatural foes who threaten the kingdom of England.

Both are great, check both out if you get the chance.

But a note about Hellsing: the manga is different from the anime in a lot of ways... I'd say the manga is better. But if you prefer anime to manga, watch the OVAs of Hellsing rather than the main anime series. The OVAs are accurate to the manga.

Full Metal Panic - Action/Mech
Gunslinger Girls - Action
Serial Experiment Lain - Just plain weird
Excel Saga - comedy

Check those out, gunslinger girls and Lain aren't very long, but the other two are nice. Excel saga is an odd one, Lain is from Dementia Anime, I think that's right, anyways it has an obscure plot even till the end, be warned.

Utawarerumono

I've only watched the first 6 episodes so far, but it's been pretty good. This is only the second anime I've really watched though, so I have no idea how it is compared to whatever shows you guys watch... check it out.

Here's a link to the begining of the first episode (they're uploaded in thirds):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=irZCFXQH_5Y

EDIT: I just completed the series. It's only 26 episodes, but it was still quite good. Kindy wished it was longer, but oh well. It's a romance/fantasy/action type of series, and had a coupld funny moments as well :). It had it's not-that-great moments, but had some really good parts too. Overall, recommended :)

You made what is an easy explanation a bad one. -_-'

Anime is simply Japanese animation, AKA here cartoons. It usually has a lot more detail in the animation than western cartoons, which makes it a lot more distinct, and episodic storylines, not like random story Looney Toons. And unlike Looney Toons, most anime stories are intended for a more mature audience than the audience cartoons aim for (children). Dragon Ball and Naruto are few well-known animes you may have heard of before.
