I want to do a talk show with people from sg and advertise through it to gain more donations for SG and such

we had a radio plugin on our server before (wasn't run by us because SG is full of people who have no idea how to run a radio station ofc) and it advertised us occasionally because they were awesome.
they were called epic radio.

RIP epic

but seriously, this wouldn't work at all, because SG has no fucking clue how to run a radio station. the only person in SG with any form of radio experience is Crazy Swede.

^^

That's a pretty bold statement assuming that nobody else in SG knows anything about it.

Anyways, I spent a great deal of time looking up different forms of radios we can put on the server. I too felt like if SG itself could run a radio on it's own it would be way better, however it requires dedi access and it's a pain in the ass dealing with like the one BD I have on my friends list to try and get it added, as a lot of it requires patience for trial and error. I like the idea but without the access I have absolutely no desire, as I learned the hard way after hours were wasted.

Main problem being handling money, and dealing with shit like that.
Sure, Spartan can handle the donations, but what about getting rights to songs? And what about getting DJ's? There are only a few on SG with the time or skill to actually DJ, let alone ~7-10

Assuming we do it the legal way as far as song rights go...nobody is going to actually care.

Finding DJ's would without a doubt be the easiest part, it'd be a learning experience for the people who started it; just like epic radio didn't automatically start knowing how to DJ immediately. Having a radio dedicated straight up to SG is such a cool concept and it's totally doable, it just takes the right people to support it.

Take it from someone whos friend ran an internet radio station. Its a moneysink. There are better ways for sg to spend the money on then risk the entire communitys finances on such a risky venture.

Caution

What part of it is a money sink? IIRC the only thing that would even cost money is the music rights, but realistically speaking nobody would care. If anything it would just take time, at least from the amount of research that I put into it.

Hell if this happens I would love to be a DJ. I got over 400 albums on iTunes all rock and Metal. I would love doing a rock segment for SG. Just dont know much about radioing but it is something you can learn and I would be willing to do it as well. All I do all day is sit here and listen to music.

I have a buddy on steam (Ultra marine's brother, I believe) who is pretty good with the stuff and said it's totally possible, all it takes is the support lol.

Why are you always jumping down people's throat on nearly ever topic. Maybe he/she got the experiences from irl, and hasn't shared those with SG. Just because you only saw Crazy Swede being a DJ for epic.radio doesn't mean that others don't have the experiences/knowledge to DJ.

It's great that you want to make a radio station, and just like Caution said, there could probably be others but me that knows how to run a radio station and/or have DJ-experiences.

But...

Here's a couple of advices if you truly decide to do it. It WILL be a real money sink for YEARS to come. The station that I today make money from, started off as an internet station. The radio licenses costs SHITLOADS. Our trick however was that every member of the station would pay their EQUAL share of the outcomes for the station, until we got big enough to actually make money. This provided us with financial stability until we had gained enough listeners to eventually buy a license from terrestrial broadcasting and an antenna to broadcast from.

Ever since we went FM, we have been making money instead of losing, but it took a couple of years until it happened. Reason Epic Radio died, was because many of the DJ's had the piss poor attitude, "Why should I pay? I am just a DJ. I broadcast, that should be enough." This is why it went down so quickly. You just CAN NOT cover the costs ONLY on donations. Sure, SG itself makes a lot of income on the donations. But just hear me out, this internet radio station, will probably be a lot of fun, and a lot of SG players will probably listen to it. But it will definitely not bring in any money, it will be a massive money sink.

At the end of the day, if you still want to do it, great! But you have been warned.

Good Luck! You're gonna need it.

once again still assuming we pay for license fees, if we keep it in-house i seriously doubt anybody is going to give a fuck, but that's not my call.

Only takes one report to get fucked over by something like that. Not gona risk it, sorry.

As Swede said, the people of epic weren't paying anymore and they were behind a lot of money to pay for targets. This doesn't include the fact they had events irl which would of probably brought in some money, but even then they were still losing. I just don't have the confidence in an idea like this money wise or participation wise.

Tbh all it would take is one report of Virus's balls going around to get fucked over for distributing to minors lol (not that I honestly give a shit, I'm just saying). I don't really care enough about this idea and figured it was probably the response it would receive, but the reasoning is kind of dumb when we don't exactly do everything legal as it is.

What are we doing Illegal then? Everything we do is legal.

Technically it definitely is not lmao, if somebody made a report to whatever the specific agency that deals with kiddie porn / minors involving sexual content saying (and showing the blatant proof that anyone could access via our website & they might be two different agencies, I'm not sure without googling it) that somebody is showing their genitalia to minors, there could probably be legit consequences.

It doesn't bother me at all, it just amazes me as to how that would get overlooked but we're up in arms when it comes to music copyright (but we condone the "illegal" discussion of how to obtain it for free).

There won't be any legal consequences for a user-posted soft-nudes.
The only thing that would happen is the host either emails the owner of the website and telling him to keep a closer eye to the content that is being posted on our forums (This is usually the first thing they do, unless the host is VERY strict) OR they will just simply suspend the webhosting (indefinite for breaking TOS or temporarily to remove the nudes).

If the nudes was posted by the OWNER of the website, then that could bring in legal consequences (unless the host's TOS allows +18 content).

Now you're arguing consequences, whereas specifically you stated nothing was illegal.

(6) “Harmful to minors” means any reproduction, imitation, characterization, description, exhibition, presentation, or representation, of whatever kind or form, depicting nudity, sexual conduct, or sexual excitement when it.

You can put it any way you want, it's still illegal...and the fact it's in the open, posted about, and acknowledged is just further proof of negligence lol. And I seriously don't want it to be looked at like I care - because I don't, but it's pretty funny how distributing it around where minors are on our forums where we have no warning at all about anything of the sort is cool, but as soon as somebody suggests music piracy everybody is a saint all of a sudden lol.

Zaraki

Music piracy is known to all, but mostly for own use. Using music without paying for the rights on an internetradio that unknown people can listen to is illegal. Tbh, it was a bad idea the moment you suggested it in the open for everybody to see, since we now know it could be illegal.. All it takes is one little bastard or a banned member with an alt account to fuck Steamgamers up.

It's a big risk and if it consumes so much money, there shouldn't even be consisered to do this.. Because SG lives off it's servers, and those are perfect as they are. What do we want exactly? An internal radiostation or more and better servers? If anything should be done, it should be the expansion of our playerbase by making new servers for fresh games.

My point of viewing this discussion. I follow Spartan.

The only way around the whole legality issue without getting licenses right away, is to only play songs that we are allowed to get for free (With permission of the artist, of course), namely those songs under the Creative Commons license. That is, until we raise enough money to get licenses to the larger songs.
I'm sure we can find a bunch of songs of varying genre that fall under that criteria. All it would require is searching.

Moving this to rejected.

I think it's a great idea but differences in opinions will never allow this to happen.
