Broadband Please state your problem here
Hi.

I'm not sure how common this is, but after like 1-2mins on either SG-server i get "Lost connection to server". My broadband isn't down. It's just that I loose the connection.
I've tried to open some ports (27015) in my router but that doesn't seem to help. It's really annoying!
This first started happen just a few weeks ago. Perhaps just one!
When I donated to SG (and before) I did not have this issue.

So, is this some issue with my broadband/router or is it the servers? I've asked other Swedish ppl that play on SG and they do not have this error.
This does however not occur every time I connect to a SG server. The other day I played on Deathrun one late night and I could play flawlessly!
But, not only do I get disconnected but I can't reconnect until 1min after the dc.

When this happens refresh your server browser and tell me if it loads or "cannot connect to master server". If it loads, then i'm not sure. If it can't find any servers, it's your broadband.

Yeah I can try that later but when I get this I often look at my favorites and just the SG's disappear. My other favorites are still there AND i can connect to them. So I guess that sort of answer your question.
But this "lost connecting..." is really random. Sometimes I can play for like 30-60 minutes, sometimes 30sek, sometimes I'm about to get disconnected but it recovers and I'm still in the game.

EDIT
It seems to be flawless at night. Though there are still like 30+ ppl on the server :S

Sure it's just you? Servers have been crashing a bit recently.

from what I've read it looks like an SG Server issue, try contacting Paul to see if there have been any other issues with the servers recently.

Yes. Since I can connect just a few seconds later and everyone is still on AND it's the same map, my guess is that it's just me.

EDIT
Plus, when I do get disconnected it's from all the SG servers, simultaneously.

I've sent a PM to him.

So I'm noticing that sometimes when I launch CSS and look at my favorites SG's doesn't allways show up. The disconnection part isn't just when I'm on the server. It's always! The weird thing is that it worked fine just a few weeks ago.

Also, no respond from Paul yet.

Well at this point from what I have gathered it seems to me that it might be the servers don't like you
But here is a thought you could try pinging and doing a trace route on the servers just to see if there is any packet loss along the way

And how would I go about doing so?

I just want to point out before hand I'm currently in college for networking but I'm still early on in the year so I'm sort of eager to help...
I'm not sure how useful it will be or if there is an easier and better way but I digress...

Do you know how to use command prompt in Win 7??
if so it is as easy as opening up command prompt typing ping and then typing an IP address(in this case it would be a steam gamers server IP since you seem to be having issues with all of them if I am correct)
for example ping would look like this
ping 72.26.196.149 (<- one of their IP's) and then pressing enter

what this should tell you is how long it takes to get to the server and if there is any packets being dropped or lost
Ideally you want no packet loss and short times, the shorter the better
But since I have no idea what the ideal latency is for people in Sweden I cant help much on what the times should be

trace route is a bit more difficult to read once executed due to it showing all hops along the network
you shouldn't need to do this but if you want to I will show you how to do it

Not sure if I did this right. But I tried both when I lost the connection and when I had the connection. This is from where I lost it and regained it a few seconds later:

No you did it right do you remember the values for when you had it??
This doesn't tell me where the problem is but it does help a bit

Although I'm not sure and I would like some other people from steam gamers to help seeing as they are a lot more experienced in this than I am and I don't want to mislead you if I am wrong

Let us know what Paul says though

Can you do a tracert on the servers both when you're fine and when you lose connection? As well as one on something like google at the same times as a sort of baseline?

I was thinking that the connection might have been lost along the route to the steam gamers servers since everything else seems fine

I'm starting to get really frustrated! Not at SG or anything. Just that I have to reconnect like 20-30 times a day and now with Minas Tirith being released very soon.
I love ZE and it's particularly fun when there's a new map that everyone wants to play. That's one of the reasons why I donated. So I wouldn't have to wait 20 for a free slot.

Remember how to do the ping in command prompt it is similar
instead of ping you use tracert
so it will look like

tracert 72.26.196.164

you should have a list when it finishes

we need to see all of it from all 3 things shadow asked for
while im still a newbie at this shadow can probably help a lot more than I can here

There's your problem. Look at the tracert for google, you get ~30ms every hop all 12 hops to the end. Now look at your tracert to the server when you AREN'T having problems, you do fine... until suddenly you get 130ms on two hops, time out entirely for one, and then 170-200ms to the end. Your tracert while having problems is basically the same thing just with more disconnects.

Even on my pretty mediocre 3mbit connection from embarq I still top out around 80ms. You can see I had a time out as well on hop 12, whatever the problem is it's somewhere between your ISP and the server.

Shadow, you are forgetting that M4D4SS is in Sweden. That 170ms from "KBN"-Telia to East Coast Voxel is a bit high, but still within normal ranges for riding the Atlantic from Sweden. "NYK"-Telia does seem to be an issue though. However, a "request timed out" does not mean much, as the router could simply be blocking or throttling ICMP.

Try running Download WinMTR from SourceForge.net (http://sourceforge.net/projects/winmtr/files/WinMTR-v092.zip/download) at the server's IP when connected, and once the server messes up, screenshot the program a bit after and post it here.

So you're saying that I should contact my ISP and ask if they've done any changes lately?

EDIT
Yeah. I'm from Sweden and the ping that I have is very normal. I've always had this ping. It's just the "lost connection to server" that is new.

Understandable, I do that a lot ;)

Try running WinMTR that I linked above, and keep it running when the server is working good and stop it after you get fully disconnected, then screenshot that up.

Is this picture enough or should I export something from the software?

Dude 800x250 is NOT big enough to read, that's like trying to read tolstoy off a postage stamp.

I really don't know what it could be (if it doesn't happen on any other servers), except for routing that would be outside of your control. Though it does look bad in your "worst" column, as you should never get that high ms to 10.x.x.x....
