so, i am finally getting a new digital camera (thank you random person buying a painting)

now my dilemma... which to get.

im looking for peoples opinions on a few different cameras.

the one im looking at, and most interested in personal opinions in, is the Canon PowerShot S5 IS

but a few others im considering...

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH
Olympus FE-350 8MP 4X Zoom
Nikon COOLPIX S600

looking for a camera with a faster shutter speed, good battery life, and something sturdy that wont break if sneeze on it.

anyone have any experience with these, let me know what you think.

Your comparing pocket point and shoots to a standard bodied S5. The digital sensors don't come close to comparing.

Dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/default.asp?view=alpha) is the best place to go for camera reviews.
Amazon (www.amazon.com) also has customer provided images if you want to see samples.

I don't know about the last two, but stay away from the SD1000. My much older SD600 can outperform it. The SD1100IS is a better choice. What's your budget?

200-300
the s5is is in there because my friend is buying a new camera and is selling hers for 240, a great deal i dont think im going to pass up...

im not sure exactly what im looking for, i just know that i've heard good things about most of those. i've read the reviews, right now it's more of 'amanda being indecisive'

What condition is it in and does it come with accessories? PowerShot's resale value isn't that great. Those camera's were $500 a year ago and Dell had them on sale for $280 shipped a few weeks ago. Most places have it in the $300 range. I would push for $220, but thats just me.

I am obivously not gonna spend a fortune on a professional grade one. But one that is durable, lightweight, good quality and can record alot.

it's not even 4 months old,and the only defect i saw on it was a cosmetic scratch on the lens cover.
she's giving me a 4g sd card, a case and a slushie.
i dont think she'll go much lower on price cuz she needs that money to buy a d5 body...

Are you going for an ultra compact or quality? The price of a new S5 is close to an S600.

that's my problem. I'm not sure which i want. I would like something small, but then again, I want better performance.
I'm torn. If i had the cash I'd get a compact little camera for every day use, and a better quality (tending to be bulkier) camera for my more serious endeavors.

As it is now, the S5 is just out of my price range, so that's not the question anymore.

i forgot MSI was coming up and had to buy tickets, so my current camera budget is no more then 250 USD

Or the SD850 (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Optical-Stabilized/dp/B000Q30420/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1209488455&sr=8-1). Same camera just with a 2.5" screen instead of the 3". For $215 with a free memory card, it's hard to beat.

What's the deal with Canon though? They've been regressing on their point and shoots. The S5 still uses a lens and sensor thats two generations old. The 700IS is still their best Digital ELPH imo. As far as ultra compacts Fuji gives great images and Sony's image stabilization is best in class, but $300+ for a T series hurts.

You can get a great deal like you just have to look. No one talks about the Olympus' compact point and shoots because their digital sensors are weak sauce. Cheaper Kodaks produce richer images imo. Nikon was in the same boat when it came to ultra compacts up until about a year ago. Great D-SLR's but they neglected the compact market. They try to cram too many mega pixels into an insufficient sensor.

If you're a daily Wooter (http://www.woot.com) like I am, then every now and then, they'll have a few Digital Cameras for great prices. Check back every day, and you may find something you like. :001_smile:
