Calling it the 3rd season generally implies its directly related to the first two seasons, which is why so many people are finding that so hard to understand lol.

In this case the 3rd season is using the world of first two seasons, however most (if not all) of the characters from the previous seasons will not be involved. (At least I think it is....)
