View Full Version : Private Servers/Realms
Any one ever play on these? And what are they like?
I kinda want to play wow again, but don't want to pay the 15 bucks a month, so was thinking about trying a private realm. So looking for some feed back.

It doesn't give you the same joy of paying 15 dollars a month. When I did try a private server it wasn't as enjoyable as the real WoW, there was always something saying in the back of my head, "this is fake don't play it"

There was a thread a while back about these. I believe it was locked due to private servers being illegal.
However i did play on some of them a long time ago. They are nothing in comparison to retail.

Some are alright, but most of the time they're months behind on patches from the real thing and almost always filled with glitches and crashes. If you go for one of those insta 80 or 10x exp servers then the game gets real boring real fast. I've also never found a good player base that's actually fun to play with on any private servers. It's worth a shot but don't expect the same thing you'd get playing the real one.
They're also supposedly 'illegal'... but you wouldn't really have to worry about any of that considering Blizzard doesn't give a flying f*ck about priv servers. They're like little ants to them in terms of business and making money.

True blizzard might not giving a flying fuck about them, but it is still technically pirating.

Well I've played a few and my top 2 are,
WoW-Pwnage and Uber WoW.
WoW-Pwnage is a little buggy and doesnt have up to date gear
Uber WoW is fully functional, very few bugs, all talents and classes work. Up to date gear.
I don't think that Private Servers hurt anything. Most people that play them have retail experience and just want to have fun and avoid the non stop grinding.
I am just asking what peoples experiences were on them. I am not saying we support it as a community. So no reason to lock this thread.
Well I think I am just going to buy my time again and play with another group from another place. SG can't ever seem to keep a player base. I want fun people to play with.

I used to play on a server called ragecraft. Now the server is near death I think :(. I left the server 3 months after I started playing CSS on SteamGamers.

I used to run my own private server called Fel Blood rp, server went down after the host disappeared. It was a lot of fun though, although I was working most of the time.

actually private servers are not illegal. it gets illegal when you edit dbc files or the owners start making so much profit from the servers that they can live off it (was head gm of a rather popular server and head dev for about a year and a half) lol

(iv) facilitate, create or maintain any unauthorized connection to the Game or the Service, including without limitation any connection to any unauthorized server that emulates, or attempts to emulate, the Service. All connections to the Game and/or the Service, whether created by the Game Client or by other tools and utilities, may only be made through methods and means expressly approved by Blizzard. Under no circumstances may you connect, or create tools that allow you or others to connect, to the Game's proprietary interface other than those expressly provided by Blizzard for public use.
There's no getting around that. Its illegal no matter what you do to it... I know were all not LegalSmashs but its not hard to understand a few simple sentences there.
Anyways, Suri, I'd suggest just shooting for a simple private server just to see if you still like the game then go from there.

It depends which one you play on. Some can be fun to experiment with all classes instead of having to level them to 80 from 1.

From what I have experienced blizz like servers are SHIT. Fun servers and Instant 80 CAN be fun, if the server is good. Sometimes they only give good/custom gear out to people who donate or who vote for them on the site.

I've played on servers where you could hardly tell it wasn't retail. It just depends on where you go and what your looking for.
Thanks for the feedback all. Given me much to think about. I may try one just to see what it's like, but I am sure at some point Blizz will see some more of my money.
Blizz did go around shutting down private servers at one point, but idk about now.
Back on topic, I played private servers before, but it get's pretty boring if there isn't a lot of people. If you enjoy playing by yourself without killstealers, then you'll probably have fun, but I like to play with a lot of people.
