Why should party lines matter? Your opinion should be your opinion.

In the UK you just register to vote, and then vote....don't think there's any allegiance sort of scheme.

I can't vote this time round though...2 days too young.

In the US you can register unaffiliated, independent, democrat, republican, and maybe some of the smaller parties like libertarian? You can register unaffiliated and still vote for anyone you like, which sounds the most like the British system.

Havok: Actually that's our problem, we DO use that system for our electoral college in all but 2 states for the Presidency and a similar system for our legislative officials.

Under our system it's possible for a president to lose the popular vote by a substantial margin and still win the presidency, and it's possible (and tragically a routine occurence) for legislative officials to redraw the district lines to such a degree that they can even un-lose an election.

Oh right.

Well, it seems likely that proportional representation will be seriously considered after the general election here, what sort of call for it is there over there?

It's not going to change anytime soon in America. Go Democracy. >_>

Yay for gerrymandering.

So much of our system is run on dishonest practice and the connections you have. Kind of makes me wish I didn't live near Chicago.

None. Most Americans revere the Constitution with more passion than the Bible. Also PR would only work if you gutted the Senate and replaced it with a PR system with proportional seats according to each state's population.

Also the rules according to Article V make Constitutional amendments extremely difficult, and a Constitutional Convention is even harder to create.

I'm pretty sure he means proportional representation of votes Potshot, especially since our lower house already has proportional representation based on population and the upper house gives everyone 2 seats.

The real reason we won't see a change to proportional assignment of electoral college votes is that the current system basically locks us into a 2-party system and neither of our parties wants to change that.

The reason we won't see a change in our legislature's districting rules is because the people who would pass the legislation to end gerrymandering are the same people who DO the gerrymandering.
