View Full Version : Killing Floor Review

To start off, Killing Floor is a Co-op survival horror game. It was made by Tripwire Studios.

It was originally conceived as a mod for UT2004.

PLAYERS
By default, Killing Floor allows a maximum of 6 players/server. But I have seen absolutely massive servers. (The biggest I have seen is 128 players). The number of zombies is catered to how many players there are in a given server. So if I was to go solo, there would be less zombies.

PERKS
Field Medic - The "healer" if you will. The field medic also gets armor boosts and I think a movement boost. On later waves, a field medic is like Jesus with a gun.

Combat Support - The name says it all. The combat support's main weapon is a shotgun, but they get grenade bonuses too. They are the fastest at welding doors, which really comes in handy on a map like Biotic Labs.

Sharpshooter - Headshots, headshots, headshots. The sharpshooter is the "sniper" class and really helps eliminate enemies before they reach (or breach) your defenses. These come in handy on maps like Farm.

Commando - The commando is a rifleman-type class who uses the Bullpup. They get faster reloads, increased damage (with the bullpup) and they are able to see the health of enemies and stalkers at a distance. They are a very good all around class.

Berzerker - If you pick Berzerker, prepare to crack some motherfucking skulls.

Firebug - Resembles the Pyro from TF2. The flamethrower is a great weapon, but must be handled with care, because you can damage yourself. In my opinion, the most annoying enemy to fight as a Firebug is a stalker. They pop up like 2 feet from you and you end up lighting yourself on fire. But, if there is a massive wave of zombies, nothing says "back the fuck up" like a wall of fire.

Here is a link that breaks down each perk level, requirements to level, and rewards.

CONS
There are a few cons in this game.
For example, when you join a server, you have to wait until the wave is over, and on certain servers it can take a while.
There are a couple glitches, but it really doesn't de-rail the gameplay, plus they will probably be patched soon.

GRAPHICS
Not the selling point of this game, but this is one of those games where gameplay > graphics. It still looks nice on high settings though.

SOUND
Cheezy british accents, gunfire, and moans of the dead and dying.

EXTRA FEATURES
The slow motion mode after a badass kill is a nice touch, really adds to the effect of the game. Spectate mode is interesting too, because it has a Grindhouse kind of feel to it.
That was my review of Killing Floor, I give it a 9/10. I hope you enjoyed it!:thumb:

^ What he said. The engine is based on Unreal 2.5, a fairly old engine. That's also why the game is so cheap. Unreal 3.0 is much more costly.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the soundtrack is fucking badass.

It doesn't go well for me though when I'm playing. I wanted a scary mood type game and the soundtrack kinda killed it, but regardless KF wasn't that scary.

Anybody who doesn't want the music going on while massacring zombies, go to options, audio and turn music all the way to the lowest.

Just something about firebug
on lvl 4 you have 90% resistance to fire and suprisingly you dont take eny damage from fire so you can just light yourself on fire and you wont die
so stalkers arent a problem eny more since you can burn around your feet "just in case"

Is there any reason the monsters in KF sometimes lag like hell? They tend to stutter from one spot to the other. My connection is fine and it isn't anything to do with my graphics settings. When running Left4Dead you can get almost 5 times the amount of zombies on screen without any of them lagging, what is the problem with KF?

Maybe the graphics engine isn't that strong.

Agreed, Commando wouldn't be that hard if the stalker kills could be killed with guns besides the bullpup, because its hard to get 600+ stalker kills when you only have around 10 per wave, and sometimes you have your pistol out or whatever the case may be. There is of couse leveling maps, but even then, sometimes there are other people trying to level commando cause its such a bitch.

Slovenec
10 Jun 2009, 02:31pm
Well you can go leveling map where spawn is separed for them and you can get ~10 per round....on solo
on suicidal long
if you're lucky you can get up to 30 of them

Kappa The 3rd
10 Jun 2009, 02:51pm
I have no clue how to run a leveling map by myself, when i try to do a solo game it always just gives me the basic 5 or 6 levels, and medic sadly I leveled on a leveling map for, in that room that damages with another guy, just went afk for like a hour xD
but yeah without the use of a leveling map, medic would be insane to level

they definitely should change the stalker bullpup kills to just killing a stalker with anything, would simplify it a lot

I'm doing in right now!
lvl 3 so far, 976 stalker kills out of 2000 and 718k dmg out of 1.5M :/
I'm afraid of lvling to lvl 5

Kappa The 3rd
10 Jun 2009, 03:37pm
oh god I can only imagine, its the same with shotgun, atleast welding is EZ-mode to level, then again rockets count towards the shotgun damage so on a leveling map you can just spam the LAW

Slovenec
10 Jun 2009, 03:57pm
Really?!
I didnt know LAW counts as shotgun dmg..I had to shoot FPs with huntuing shotgun so I got lvl 5..
btw you can have LAW and shotgun at lvl 5 since you get that much extra space..

Kappa The 3rd
10 Jun 2009, 03:59pm
how much dmg do you need to do to get from 4-5 support? and yeah i found out accidentaly in a real game, its quite handy.
let me guess you get like 24g? at lvl 5 support?

I love lvl 5 medic though, the run speed increase helps so much in the last couple waves against FP's cuz you run just a tiny bit slower then them when they are enraged so its not hard to run away

Slovenec
10 Jun 2009, 04:08pm
23g and you need 3,5M dmg
You also get some speed boost when you have berserker lvl 5 (when you run with knife)

Kappa The 3rd
10 Jun 2009, 04:13pm
oh, but berserker isnt that fun really. berserker and firebug are the two i dont plan on leveling, just doesnt
seem good enough to level, id love to be a lvl 5 sharpshooter, but doing headshots with other ppl killing things is hard as hell

and WOW 3.5 million?! T_T

Slovenec
10 Jun 2009, 04:16pm
firebug->3.5M
Berserker->3.5M
support->3.5M
Commando->3.5M
berserker is really easy to lvl
you go solo game on suicidal with only FPs and you put something on your mouse so its sawing and you go to sleep...

You can do that, that is, until the FP's get stuck. Then it's a bad idea. I also found Support Spec. so much easier to level. Takes me about 20 minutes with a double-barrel to get 1.5M damage. Takes me 40 minutes with a chainsaw.

i just got the game, and i give it a 9/10 also. i am usually combat support, which is great when the slow motion comes up, you have a shotgun, about 10 clots in front of you... that is just ownage in a can, everything about the game is good, gameplay, graphics ok... one problem... sound. the damn voices are comical, and this game is supposed to be a survival horror right??? but you have the guys trying to be funny, especially when they give money to another teammate, then you say, WTF IS UR PROBLEM!! but again 9/10 with the only flaw of the voices

Kappa The 3rd
12 Jun 2009, 01:49pm
lol the voices MONEY MONEY MONEY!
yeah they can get a little annoying, while trying to level medic I was so sick of hearing "stand still or I'll stick it where the bloody sun dont shine"

Provectus
12 Jun 2009, 02:13pm
Yeah, because actually sticking it in someone's balls is actually what I would want to see. Why not just turn them off, there's always that option. :/

Usually when someone says "where the sun doesn't shine", they mean the bottocks.

Yeah, support and/or medic are both good, although medic does get boring if you're playing on the early stages since there is no real action. It becomes a necessity in the late game.
