What is my map about?
Human survivors begin their escape from the roof of a modern day mall. While dodging zombies and making their way threw the stores to get to the ground floor where an armored vehicle is waiting to take them to safety. Will you be able to escape or will you become zombie lunch?

Current Map Plans/ What I will be doing
I am starting with the spawn. I am basing my spawn off a mall model from GTA: Vice City (Thanks Svendy). I currently have a VERY rough version of the spawn. However, it's been scraped and I'm starting the spawn over.

my first thought was to include a big open space like the one in the mall in GTA: Vice City

btw i hope you know what you are doing, i screwed my first map (ze_SFJ_high_school) up really bad, i'm still trying to fix it... but hopefully i'll soon be done.

your going to have competition from atix with his mall map, and the mall map from the new l4d campaign :)

I guess with a mall you gotta work out how you want the humans to get from A to B (or start to end). You could try watching Dawn of the Dead (zombie mall film) and Eight Legged Freaks (spiders i know, but they still hide in a mall) for ideas. Maybe the end could be a helicopter on the roof, or a secret bunker in the basement?

Definitely an Ammo store, big open space maybe two levels to the mall? multiple ways to the roof if your gonna escape by chopper lift stairs ect, but on the whole sounds nice.

For mapping beginning an excape map can be tricky. Good luck, nice idea.

you should also include camping spots like stores... it would be cool if it was like ATIX_helicopter where stalling is KEY.

I'm sure killermidget was talking about making a mall map ages ago, but I guess that kind of fell through :toung:

You could always have the spawn in a Ammo/gun store that would be petty cool, you could also have choke points like "hold the lift for 20 seconds or something"

I'm currently in the works of learning how to create maps. And I figure I'll start my first project, ze_mall_escape.

Breakdown: Humans have been invaded by zombies in a mall. The survivors must escape their way through stores and obstacles to the underground bunker before the Army nukes the mall to contain the outbreak.

What I need from the community is ideas about possible rooms, obstacles, etc. So feel free to post anything that comes to mind.

Remember that if it for escape try and make all baracades solid and not ones you have to build. ZE physics do not like to build barracades.

Make a room where there is movies, games, computers, and such. (An electric store.)

Svendy I love the Vice City idea. It would fit great in these progresses, and that it brings back old memories :D

And about the map itself... I just can't wait. Very nice Xtrm.

Gun shop.
When you get inside, you hit a button and it locks down. Go to the back door, you "set explosives" there, and wait for it to go.

Zombies break down the door and shit, and you hold them off. :>
(Maybe have shelves to cade with?)

Theatre, you break through the screen and escape through the back and through an emergency exit? xD

I never started. I scrapped the idea. I don't know why the topic got bumped.

Someone delete this topic... If I decide to make the map the way I want it. I'll repost.

Ah, it was a good idea though.

That's why I decided to start over and take a new approach but with the same concept.

Starting tonight.

Wrote down everyone's ideas so if I use them I know who to thank. Keep posting some ideas. I'll start updating this topic regularly.

it was Gleemax, not ATIX. And yes, he gets pissy about these things.

As for this, if it is your first map, i would practice things rather then jump right in. Escape is one of the harder things to map for.

And then the updated description would be...

Survivors from a deadly infection outbreak wait outside of a modern day mall to be rescued. However, the infection has found them. Survivors are informed of an Army escort on the other side of the mall, they are forced to enter the mall that they fought so hard to escape from. Dodging the infected through stores and rubble, will the survivors escape the infected mall or will they become members of the infected?

sounds like a good idea for map aslong as there are multiple ways so there can be minimal blocking

hey thats gives me a idea for a dawn of dead like map where u start off in mall and gotta goto parking garage to kill zombie and u drive to docks and zombies make a last chance to kill u and the goverment nukes it.

Oh yeah trust me I got a custom skybox (a nice night one (even though 99% of the map is inside, but windows I guess)).

try getting multiple people to kinda help with coding and physics and other things it would go faster if u had a few people doin different things although it isnt such a good idea because ur gonna constantly have to update what ur working on and some things mite just not work out

Pretty sexy night skybox.. Instead of making everything out of a cement texture do nodraw texture, that way you are optimizing while going along, instead of after which is a bad idea.. Not to mention texturing is the gayest part of mapping, so if you leave it all until the end it will probably discourage you. I suggest starting every block you make as a nodraw texture, then texturing the sides. That way if you need to cut a block in half the two sides will be nodrawn already because you initially created the block as no draw.

The map isn't abandoned just on hiatus. I don't know where to start after the spawn so I need to get some ideas and making another map will just fill the time.

maybe u could have it like a actual mall once u get into building and u run thru mall dodgeing zombies and there are alternate routes some are faster but are easier to die in by zombies some are slower but its a small space so better to kill zombies in

If you're copying the exact gta mall, rename it to something like ze_vicecitymall_escape

It's coming along nicely
