Well, Pentium D's just aren't what they used to be anymore, so I've decided to finally upgrade to an AMD Quad Core:

Here's the motherboard I plan on getting with it as well:

Just wanted to know what you guys think of these two items. I think they're great for the price, and the reviews are pretty decent. Let me know what you all think. :001_smile:

It's probably best to steer clear of AMD in favour of an Intel Core 2 at the moment, unless you're a serious fan boy. :001_tt2:

Maybe something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036 ?

Or if you have your heart set on a quad-core, Subzero's recommendation is a good one for that price range. (Note the OEM version is $10 cheaper)

The AMD Phenom 9950 beats the C2Q Q6600 in the majority of benchmark tests. It's also a proper quad core if I remember correctly, unlike the C2Q which is two dual cores tacked together.

The next iteration of the C2Q will obviously beat the 9950, but the price point will be higher. So as far as bang for the buck goes, the 9950 wins here.

But aren't they crappy for overclocking?

I don't plan on overclocking anyway.

Well then, I'd probably say stick with the Phenom, they do seem to be quicker when comparing the two processors at stock speeds.

I don't know if it's still the case, but the 780g has had trouble powering 125w chips. Any particular reason why you're going with a mATX board? I hope you're not planning on gaming with the integrated graphics. The 780g is the equivalent of an HD3450 and can even run crossfire with it, but by no means do they compare to even a modest $50 graphic card.

Yeah, didn't notice that board was micro ATX. Found this one instead. Any thoughts?

I just bought a Q9550 cpu and I'm happy with it, also look into ASUS mobos, there a bit pricey and cramped but they're not half bad.

The 9950 is fine for overclocking.

With a little more research that seems to be the case. Anyway, if you're not overclocking there's no point in discussing hypotheticals. Good luck with the upgrade.

If you're looking for something with integrated graphics, the NVIDIA 8200 and the AMD 780G are pretty solid. As far as full ATX boards with IG, there aren't any that stand out above the rest, so the MSI is a solid choice. The only thing missing from it is an HDMI port. Don't know if that's important to you, but just pointing it out. There are a couple others around the price range that include it. Other than that, a micro board isn't a bad choice if you're not going to add much to it.

The CPU is a solid rival to the Q6600, particularly now that their prices are the same. The only thing I worth mentioning is that AMD should be releasing their 45nm chips by the end of the year.

One other thing that would be important, your CPU is a Socket 775 right?

Socket 775 is what is currently used with Intel. It wouldn't apply to the Phenom 9950 which uses Socket AM2+ motherboards.

i recommend forming a cluster if you really want processing speed
anyways, yes thats a decent quad-core for a reasonable price
but are you sure you dont want a higher-up motherboard, since the motherboard is really the only thing that may stay when upgrading parts in the future
it is decent
